The early part of the year can often feel like a bit of a drag with Christmas excesses long forgotten and nothing but gloomy weather and chilly evenings to fill our thoughts. It’s easy at this time of year to lose momentum and struggle to reach our goals, big and small. Tonight is the full moon, an event that happens each month affording us the opportunity to tap into the power of the lunar cycle, using the subtle energies of the moon to guide and balance our lives.
This evening is actually the coming together of 3 separate events. First, it’s a super moon, so called because the moon is closer to Earth in its orbit and appears bigger and brighter than usual. It’s the second full moon of the month, known as a blue moon and if that’s not enough it’s also a blood moon. The moon will pass through the Earth’s shadow and generate a total lunar eclipse. As the eclipse reaches its peak the moon will take on a reddish hue; an effect known as a blood moon.
The Influence of the Full Moon
Historically eclipses are harbingers of change, enhancing our ability to manifest, revealing our most hidden thoughts and desires and even expediting the end of situations that we’ve outgrown. Emotions are heightened around the time of the full moon and with a total lunar eclipse in particular, the blotting out of the Moon represents a resetting of the emotions, clearing away the baggage of the previous six months.
This moon is in the fire sign of Leo and rules identity and self-expression. Linked to the heart chakra Leo teaches us to love ourselves and appreciate who we are, just as we are. Embrace the fire and go out and get things done. It’s been 150 years since this celestial trifecta last occurred, so make the most of it!
A Ritual of Release for the Full Moon
The Blue Moon is usually prime time for rituals, ceremonies, and protection. Whether you can see the Moon or not remember its gentle power is still penetrating our spirits.
Fire and water are great symbolic ways of purifying.
· Fire – consumes, burns away the old
· Water – cleanses, washes away
What you need: pen, paper, matches, candle, two small bowls, water and a little time
If possible do this outside under the Full Moon, connecting directly with Mother Nature and the Moon’s energies. If you can’t be outside, find a quiet place indoors that feels special to you.
Create a Sacred Space
If you’re not performing this ritual outside, find a quiet place to sit. Take the time to declutter the space and place your ritual items around you. If you choose to you can play some relaxing music or just enjoy the silence and the sounds of the world around you.
Clear your energy
Light a candle and incense to connect to your senses. Burn sage to clear negative or low energies. Close your eyes and imagine yourself standing under a silver waterfall and allow all negative energies to be washed away.
Become fully present in your body by bringing awareness to your breath and sending each breath into the body from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. Notice any tensions in both your mind and your body and allow them to melt away with each breath you take.
When you feel ready, take your paper and write what you intend to release from your life. What limiting beliefs are you done with? What relationships or job are no longer serving you? What emotions need to be healed and forgiven? When you are done sign and date the paper.
Breathe deep into your heart and declare “I now release ________. And so it is”
Let the universe handle it from here.
Now you are ready for the good stuff…
Hold one corner of the paper over the candle allowing the flame to burn away what you are releasing. Watch the smoke release your intention to the Universe.
If your piece of paper struggles to light or burn, please consider if you are really ready to let this go! Only when you are truly willing to let go will the page burn – the faster the flames, the more willing you are to let it go.
Wash it away
Then place your hands in the bowl of water, signifying cleansing of the old and opening to the new. Remove your hands from the water and dry them taking a few deep breaths.
Sit in silence for a moment to integrate the feelings of release. End with forgiveness and gratitude. Let all the negativity you have toward these problems drain away by forgiving the situation or person who wronged you (even if it’s you!) and thank yourself and the Universe for taking care of this situation on your behalf.
Indulge yourself by taking a hot Epsom salt bath or give yourself a massage with essential oils to honour the physical and emotional release you’ve just experienced.
The above is only a suggestion of how to carry out a moon time ritual. Always follow your intuition. Stand outside and bathe under the moonlight, go somewhere quiet and yell out all the things you choose to release or just sit quietly and meditate. Whatever you do make the ritual your own.
